You walk out to your car in the morning, coffee in hand… and there it is. A small puddle underneath.

At first, it’s easy to brush it off. Maybe it’s just water. Maybe it’s nothing. Sometimes it is. But sometimes, that little spot on your driveway is your car trying to tell you something before it becomes a much bigger problem.

At CarLife Auto Repair, we get this question all the time. The good news is, you don’t need to be a mechanic to get a general idea of what’s going on—you just need to know what to look for.

Clear Liquid Under Your Car

Let’s start with the most common and least concerning.

If the fluid is clear and odorless, there’s a good chance it’s just water from your air conditioning system. This is especially common here in Arizona, where your AC is working almost year-round.

You’ll usually notice it more during the summer months, and it tends to show up toward the front passenger side of the vehicle. In most cases, this is completely normal.

Dark Brown or Black Fluid

If the liquid looks darker brown or even black, it’s often engine oil.

Oil leaks can start small, but they don’t stay that way forever. Over time, low oil levels can lead to increased engine wear or even serious damage if ignored.

You might also notice:

  • A slight burning smell
  • Oil spots where you park regularly
  • The need to top off oil more often

This is one of those situations where catching it early can make a big difference.

Green, Orange, or Pink Fluid

Brightly colored fluid usually points to coolant.

Coolant plays a critical role in keeping your engine from overheating, which is something that matters even more in Scottsdale and Gilbert heat.

A coolant leak might start as just a few drops, but it can quickly turn into:

  • Rising engine temperatures
  • Reduced performance
  • Potential engine damage

If you see colored fluid and notice your temperature gauge acting differently, it’s time to get it checked.

Reddish Fluid

Red or reddish-brown fluid is typically transmission fluid.

This one tends to show up closer to the middle of the vehicle and can sometimes have a slightly sweet or chemical smell.

Transmission issues can be expensive if ignored, which is why early detection matters. A small leak today is much easier to deal with than a full transmission repair down the road.

When a Small Leak Isn’t So Small

Not every leak is an emergency, but some definitely shouldn’t wait. If you notice any of the following, it’s best to have your vehicle inspected sooner rather than later:

  • A growing puddle under your car
  • Multiple spots in different colors
  • Any leak paired with a warning light
  • A noticeable change in how your car drives

Your vehicle is designed to give you early warning signs. The key is catching them before they turn into something more serious.

The CarLife Approach

At CarLife Auto Repair, we take the guesswork out of situations like this. If you’re not sure what’s leaking, we’ll identify it, show you exactly where it’s coming from, and walk you through what needs to happen next.

No overcomplicating it. No unnecessary repairs. Just clear, honest answers. Because most of the time, small leaks are fixable—especially when you catch them early.

That little spot in your driveway might not seem like a big deal today… but it’s always worth knowing for sure.
