Every year, Arizona welcomes thousands of snowbirds escaping colder climates for our sunshine, golf courses, and mild winter roads. Whether your seasonal home is in Gilbert, Scottsdale, or anywhere in the Valley, there’s one thing that needs extra attention during your winter stay: your vehicle.

Cold-weather states can be rough on cars, and long periods of sitting can be just as damaging. So before your season kicks into gear, here’s your simple, stress-free Snowbird Car Care Checklist to keep your vehicle reliable, safe, and ready for all your winter adventures.

1. Start With a Full Vehicle Inspection

If your car has been sitting for weeks or months, this is the most important step. A quick inspection helps catch small issues before they become big ones — especially after long periods of inactivity.

What we check:

  • Battery health
  • Fluid condition and levels
  • Brakes
  • Tire tread & pressure
  • Belts & hoses
  • Filters
  • Suspension wear
  • AC & heat performance

A comprehensive inspection sets your whole season up for success.

2. Check the Battery — Sitting Cars Lose Charge

Batteries naturally drain when cars sit.
Add Arizona heat on top of that, and many snowbirds discover a dead or weak battery when they return.

Signs your battery might be on its last season:

  • Slow cranking
  • Clicking when starting
  • Dim interior lights
  • Battery case swelling
  • More than 3 years old

A quick battery test tells you immediately if it’s time to replace it.

3. Tires Need Extra Love — Especially After Sitting

Rubber doesn’t like long naps.
If your car has been sitting in a garage or storage spot, your tires may have:

  • Low pressure
  • Flat-spotting
  • Cracks or dry rot
  • Uneven wear

Pro tip:

We offer free tire pressure checks anytime — and if you’d like, we can show you how to use a tread depth gauge too.

4. Top Off or Replace Vital Fluids

Seasonal cars often need fresh fluids to keep systems healthy and protected.

Important fluids to check:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant
  • Transmission fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid

Old fluids break down and lose their protective properties, especially in Arizona heat.

5. Don’t Forget the Brakes

Even when cars sit, brakes can develop:

  • Surface rust
  • Noise
  • Pulsation
  • Unever wear
  • Sticking calipers (in some cases)

If you hear squeaks, grinding, or feel vibrations — it’s time for a brake check.

6. Check Your Filters — Arizona Dust Works Overtime

Filters are small but mighty.

Most snowbirds need fresh:

  • Engine air filter
  • Cabin air filter

Dust, pollen, and desert debris clog filters faster here than in northern climates.
Clean filters help your AC & heat work properly — huge during fluctuating winter temps.

7. If You’re Driving Long Distances Into Arizona… Prep Before You Hit the Desert

Many snowbirds road-trip from colder states. Before hitting Arizona highways, make sure you:

  • Check wipers
  • Inspect tires
  • Verify coolant strength
  • Test heat AND AC
  • Pack an emergency kit
  • Check battery condition

The long trek plus elevation changes can stress your vehicle.

8. If Your Car Will Sit Here After You Leave — Prep It for Storage

When snowbirds head home for the summer, your vehicle needs a little prep to avoid issues next winter.

Before you leave, consider:

  • Changing the oil
  • Filling the gas tank
  • Using fuel stabilizer
  • Disconnecting the battery or using a tender
  • Parking on level ground
  • Avoiding parking directly on hot concrete
  • Covering the vehicle (if stored outdoors)

These steps help prevent corrosion, battery drain, and fuel degradation.

9. Keep an Emergency Kit in the Car (Winter or Summer)

Even winter drivers in Arizona should carry:

  • Flashlight
  • Phone charger
  • Emergency water
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • First aid kit
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Portable jump pack
  • Umbrella

A little preparation goes a long way.
