Monsoon Season Isn’t Over Yet: Protect Your Car During Arizona’s Wildest Weather

Arizona monsoon season may feel like it comes and goes in waves, but the truth is:
Every storm has the power to create real danger on the roads — especially in Gilbert, Scottsdale, and the East Valley.
From sudden downpours to dust storms to flash flooding, your vehicle takes a beating during monsoon months. That’s why we put together a simple, practical guide to help you stay safe (and avoid expensive repairs) during the rest of the season.
1. Start With Your Tires — Your #1 Defense in Wet Weather
Tires with low tread = hydroplaning city.
What to check:
- Minimum tread: 4/32" for wet roads
- Tire age: Arizona heat kills rubber early
- Uneven wear patterns: Could indicate alignment issues
- Tire pressure: Drops when the weather cools, spikes when it heats
And remember — if you’re unsure, stop by CarLife anytime for a FREE tire inspection.
(And yes — we’ll even show you how to use a tread depth gauge!)
2. Replace Wiper Blades Early, Not After They Fail
The sun destroys wipers long before the first storm hits.
Signs yours are done:
- Streaking
- Squeaking
- Skipping
- Missing sections of the windshield
- Rubber peeling or cracked
If they haven’t been replaced in the last 6–12 months, it’s time.
3. Check Your Battery — Heat Weakens It, Storms Expose It
Monsoon season doesn’t kill your battery.
Summer heat before monsoon season does.
Storms simply expose a weak battery that’s already failing.
Look for:
- Slow cranking
- Dim lights
- Clicking sound when starting
- A battery older than 3 years
We can test your battery in two minutes — free, of course.
4. Make Sure Your Brakes Can Handle Sudden Stops
Wet roads + worn brakes = dangerous stopping distances.
Signs you need a brake check:
- Squealing
- Grinding
- Vibrations
- “Soft” or sinking pedal
- Longer stopping distance
Monsoon season is NOT the time to push brakes past their limit.
5. Avoid Driving Through Flooded Roads — Even If It Looks Shallow
Flash floods happen FAST in Arizona.
And only 6 inches of water can cause a loss of control.
Flood water also leads to:
- Engine hydrolock (VERY expensive)
- Stalling
- Brake failure
- Electronics damage
If the road is flooded — turn around.
(As the signs say: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.)
6. Protect Your Engine From Dust Storms
Haboobs = clogged air filters = low power.
If you’ve driven through:
- Dust
- Sand
- A haboob
- Construction zones
…it’s time to check the air filter.
Dirty filters cause:
- Reduced AC performance
- Poor acceleration
- Higher fuel consumption
- Engine strain
A $20–$30 filter can save you hundreds in repairs.
7. Keep Your AC Healthy During Storm Season
Humidity puts extra strain on your AC system.
Signs your AC isn’t storm-ready:
- Weak airflow
- Warm air at startup
- Strange smells
- Loud fan sounds
A simple AC inspection can prevent a summer breakdown.
8. Don’t Forget the Essentials Kit for Monsoon Driving
Every Arizona driver should carry:
- Flashlight
- Emergency water
- Phone charger
- Tire gauge
- Jumper cables
- Umbrella
- Microfiber cloth
- Portable battery jump pack
- Small first-aid kit
Prepare like you’ll need it — so you never actually do.
