Ever wondered what a differential is?

It may sound complicated, but it’s one of the most important parts of your drivetrain. A differential allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds—especially while turning. Without it, your tires would skid, your ride would feel jerky, and parts would wear out much faster.

🔧 Types of Differentials (and Why They Matter)

  • Open Differential (Standard):
The most common type in passenger cars. It splits power between the left and right wheels, but if one tire loses traction (like on ice or gravel), all the power goes to that slipping wheel.
  • Limited-Slip Differential (LSD):
Found in performance vehicles and trucks. LSDs limit the difference in wheel speed, giving better traction on slick or uneven surfaces by sending power to the wheel with grip.
  • Locking Differential (Locker):
Popular in off-road and heavy-duty vehicles. Both wheels are locked together to spin at the same speed, no matter the conditions. Great for mud, sand, and rock crawling.
  • Torque-Vectoring Differential (High-Tech):
Seen in modern luxury and performance vehicles. It actively distributes power side-to-side with electronics and clutches, improving cornering, handling, and stability.

🚨 Signs of Trouble

  • Whining, humming, or clunking noises when accelerating or turning
  • Vibrations that increase with speed
  • Difficulty steering smoothly through corners

Neglecting differential maintenance can lead to costly drivetrain repairs, so a little attention goes a long way.

Bottom line: Your differential is the unsung hero keeping your wheels working together in harmony.
