An Ode to the Past

They say the future is the way to go, that everything hopeful is to look ahead. However, if you do not pay attention to the past, you miss out on great treasures. Here at Carlife we have an avid appreciation for classic cars, and not just the auto repair side of it, but the character that is etched into each historical car. There is so much more behind a car, and the cars of the past have stories that could speak for themselves. If you look hard enough, pay attention, the past can teach us some powerful things, and give us a new perspective on life.

With the car being invented in 1885, since then there has been vast improvements and additions. There are thousands of makes, models, styles, and sizes of cars. Today we are going to highlight one of the thousands from the past that brings out a deep character we love. Meet the beautiful, character infused Packard 901 Sedan from 1932.


Packard 1932

The Packard Motor Car Company was located in Detroit Michigan, and sought to create a new model for the year to boost their marketing during the depression. They built this car to compete with other higher end models of the day. The Packard 901 series was a four door, five passenger sedan, or a two door 2/4 passenger, priced at the time from $1,750 to $2,485 depending on the model, light eight or standard eight.


The Depression

The Packard Sedan of 1932 came at one of the largest economic downturns in history. The great depression began in the United States and became worldwide news with the stock market crash October 29, 1929 (known as Black Tuesday). The great depression affected the rich, the poor and everyone in between. International trade plummeted extensively, and the unemployment rate in America rose to 25%. The depression hit industry really hard. People lost their jobs, farmers prices were cut to a dangerous level and families struggled to feed their children.
Throughout the devastation, Packard sought to come out on top by creating their 1932 series. This series was at the end of the depression age and the company worked to bring about customers to the new model. The car was not ful luxury, but offered many amenities that could compete with the other models geared toward upper middle class individuals of the time.


Character

The cars today are not created out of a depression, but out of other motivations. The interesting aspect of the Packard 901 Sedan from 1932 is what it saw during its invention. The economy was devastated, families were just trying to come back, jobs were starting to come back around, and there was hope in the air that things could change. The Packard Sedan of 1932 not only is a beautiful design, but it represents a time that struggled, toiled and worked to find hope in a hopeless time.
