How Dangerous is Drinking and Driving?

There are a lot of things in this world that work well together. Cookies and milk, Batman and Robin, hugs and kisses, Lady and Gaga, and auto repair Peoria and you have all proven to be some of the most successful combinations out there. However, not all dynamic duos are meant to be. Ranking amongst the top ten of least successful combinations in the world is drinking and driving.

Most people don’t intend any harm when they decide to drink and drive. However, while harm may not be intended it cannot always be avoided. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded that in 2014 nearly one third of all traffic-related deaths occurred from alcohol-impaired drivers. Their statistics also show that the younger a drunk driver is the more likely they are to be in a fatal crash. Other substances can influence our driving besides alcohol, as well. Sixteen percent of motor vehicle crashes have involved drivers under the influence of drugs (legal and illegal). So make sure to check if any prescribed medicines may influence your driving capability.

What if it’s only a little alcohol? Would it really impair a driver that much? An article on WebMD.com states, “…Drivers who tested positive for blood alcohol at levels well-below the legal BAC limit were more likely to be in severe car accidents than sober drivers largely because they drove significantly faster, were less likely to be appropriately using a seatbelt, and were usually driving the striking vehicle.” The CDC reports that even .02% blood alcohol concentration can impair visual functions and multitasking abilities.

Drinking and driving is very dangerous. Designating a sober driver or using taxi-type services such as Uber can instead mitigate the risk of drunk driving. So why take a chance? Thank you for driving safely and drinking responsibly.

Formula 1: Can I drive one?

Formula 1 (F1) racing is the fastest circuit racing in the world right now and it doesn’t look like it will be surpassed anytime soon. F1 cars are made for speed. Every aspect of the vehicle is designed to aid in its performance on the circuit track.

F1 racecars have been recorded going up to 225 mph while on a circuit. Outside of racers, it is probably hard for most us to imagine even going that fast in a vehicle let alone going that fast during an actual race.

Got a thing for speed? Then take a look at our blog about the Fastest Car in the World.

According to HindustanTimes.com, the difference between Formula 1 cars and street cars is pretty extreme.

“Four wheels and steering. Yes. That’s about the only common thing between a road car and a Formula 1 car.”

For comparison’s sake, they talked about how the average hatchback will struggle to get to about 70 mph in 12 seconds while F1 cars can reach about 186 mph in under 12 seconds. That’s a huge difference in acceleration!

Above is an image from the Hindustan Times explaining in further detail the differences between an F1 car and street cars.

Speed and acceleration aren’t the only differences between an F1 car and an average street car. For instance, the brakes of an F1 vehicle are capable of some serious stopping power…maybe too much?

Just a fair warning, this next bit is kind of gross.

“The corresponding G-force, which sometimes can be over 4.5 times that of gravity, can sometimes force a tear from your eye and splatter it onto the visor.”

Yep, that’s a thing apparently… No Mesa auto repair can fix that! Maybe sticking to normal vehicles is the best option for most of us.

With that, this has been your local auto repair Mesa Az wishing you a good day. Drive safe!

Fastest Car in the World?

Ahh cars… they are a way of life for the average American. If you live in Arizona you likely own one since no one wants to ride a bike in that heat! You can even cook breakfast going from Gilbert to Mesa under that solar oven we call the sun! Ok, maybe not exactly. Either way, cars have become an essential part of life for many of us. We use them every day. With this frequent use, over time a very important spark begins to flicker out of the deep, dark corners of the farthest reaches of our minds and it asks one very important question:

How fast can this thing go?

Some of us know the answer that question… and hopefully if was by looking it up on the internet and staying safe on the road! You might own a pretty fast vehicle yourself but most likely there is something out there even faster, especially if it’s a supercar. According to GlobalCarsBrands.com, the current fastest supercar known to man is the Koenigsegg Agera R clocking in at a top speed of 273 Mph! It’s pretty fast. It’s not the typical vehicle you would find at your Glendale Peoria auto repair shop. So how does that compare to the other fastest land speeds out there?

A quick Google search will show that Usain Bolt has run at a speed of 28 Mph, a cheetah can get up to 75 Mph, and Formula 1 cars have been recorded going at speeds of up to 225 Mph while on a circuit (racetrack). If you’re faster than a Formula 1 car, you’re going pretty fast. And the best part is…the Koenigsegg Agera R is available for purchase! Now you and all your neighbors can own one! That is, if you and all your neighbors pitch in for the price of just one. This puppy will cost a pretty dime at a little over $1.1 million. Mortgages are so last month!

While the 273 Mph is the current supercar record, there is no doubt that it will soon be surpassed by future supercars. We might not all get to experience that kind of speed firsthand and likely some of us are perfectly happy that’s the case. Of course, there’s no shame in being safe. With that, this has been your Phoenix, Gilbert, Mesa, Glendale Peoria auto repair shop keeping it real! Stay safe!

Travel Destinations: Arizona

How often do we take the time to enjoy what our own state has to offer? If you’re reading this you are likely a resident of the one and only Grand Canyon State. We see this desert wilderness everyday because we live in it and that can make it easy to take for granted. There are a lot of beautiful destinations here that are unique to us and cannot be experienced anywhere else. How many of us have actually seen Monument Valley? And, no, television doesn’t count. It’s easy to let these places slip by on our vacation destinations list because they are on our turf. Hopefully, however, we can manage to behold what makes our own state unique. So, in no particular order, here’s a list of some of the best travel destinations to visit in our very own backyard.

1. Antelope Canyon

Our first attraction lies outside of Page and consists of two slot canyons, which are formed by the passing of water through multiple layers of rock. These natural, colorful canyons make for great photos whether you are a professional photographer or taking pictures for your home. To visit either canyon requires signing up for one of the various tour options available inside the Navajo Tribal Park.

2. Sedona

This scenic town is a great spot to go hiking and enjoy the beautiful red rock mountains in the area. Residents of Gilbert, Mesa, and the general Phoenix area can all make a fun day trip out of it as it is located a short hour to hour and a half north of Phoenix and the general Phoenix area. There are plenty of activities to do for the adventurous and for those who want to keep things more urban. Plus, Sedona comes with its views, including the iconic Cathedral Rock which can be hiked to via Cathedral Rock Trail.

3. Havasu Falls

Dropping 100 ft into a beautifully colored pool of water is our next entry, Havasu Falls. The water has a distinct bluish-green hue due to a high concentration of a certain mineral. Reaching the Falls requires a hike of around 10 miles each way there and back but it can also be incorporated into a larger hike of up to around three days if you would like to visit the local village, creek, and the multiple waterfalls on the way.

4. Monument Valley

We have all seen this sightseeing destination portrayed on the big screen in old westerns and otherwise. Monument Valley is one thing to see on screen and another to behold in person. Sunrise and sunset both provide especially breathtaking views where the entire valley is glowing in color. The scenic route can be filled with drivers so it is advisable to also hire one of the park’s authorized guides to catch the scenic views all by yourselves.

5. Grand Canyon – North Rim

Ah yes, how can there be an Arizona travel destination list without the Grand Canyon in it? Because this location is so well known, we thought that we would mention the lesser traveled “half” of this wonder. The North Rim gets less visitors than the ever popular South Rim subsequently provides a less crowded experience when enjoying the beautiful views it has to offer. The North Rim also comes with its own sights and hikes (big and small) and may provide a more pleasant Grand Canyon experience.

Each of these travel spots comes with its own sights and wonders. Hopefully, you are now feeling more inspired to check out the destinations our state has to offer. Even though they are relatively close to us, they can be just as enjoyable of a trip as anywhere else. Before you travel to these destinations, make sure to stop by your local auto repair in Glendale, or wherever you may be, so you don’t have to worry about car troubles on the road. The views are definitely nicer when the car is running.

Staying Cool in the Heat – A/C Is Your Friend

Glendale, Arizona has a hot desert climate. Shrub lands cover most of the area, with a notable lack of the natural shade and cooler climate offered by a greener landscape. The average daily high temperature is above 98°F from the beginning of June to the end of September. There is little to no cloud cover on most days, and air conditioning is a must-have in both your home and vehicle, not a luxury! When they need A/C repair, Glendale AZ residents come to CarLife Professional Auto Services.

What it’s like to be a Stuntman

We all know movies are better with explosions. It’s a simple fact of life. Like how the sky is blue and snowboarding is more difficult in the Summer. Most movie-goers can conjure up an image of James Bond walking casually towards the screen as a building is blown to pieces in the background. The Silver Screen is often filled with explosions, high-flying action, and life threatening situations which, in real life, would be pretty intense! But because so many are familiar with the tricks-of-the-trade of the movie biz (CG animation, safety wires, and the like) the audience can be left wondering just how dangerous or how real a stunt really was. Every stunt-filled movie has a team of brave stuntmen and women who put themselves in harm’s way to make fictional characters like James Bond look like some of the coolest cats around. People still say that right?

Even though stuntmen fill in for the big names in a picture film, their life on the set isn’t always so luxurious. As this article on HowStuffWorks.com states, “A shoot can often take place in uncomfortable situations — they might spend hours partially submerged in water or have to do a location shoot on an icy mountain or a hot desert…Only a very few top tier stunt people make six figure annual incomes.” Filmmakers and stuntmen alike want to make sure stunts go as smoothly as possible without injuries. And that takes planning and preparation. Without the necessary precautions things can go bad–like how they did for Hal Needham when working on a stunt involving flipping a car on a beach.

It probably doesn’t sound like the craziest of stunts right? They just gotta flip the thing over. But since the stunt will be filmed on a beach they can’t do it the conventional way. Using a ramp, for instance, is only possible if it can be hid behind bushes or something similar. So now there’s a problem. Hal has to figure out how to flip this car over using unconventional means. So all of a sudden, explosives are in the picture. The idea was that Hal would have some people weld a cannon through the bottom of the car on one side so that the explosion from a shot would flip the car over (Jalopnik.com).

What you might have thought would not be among the most life-threatening stunts in Hollywood just got a lot more dangerous. Long-story short, they end up putting too much powder in the cannon and the car flies about 30 feet in the air with Hal inside it! As you might have guessed the car was pretty damaged. Probably beyond the capabilities of any Phoenix auto repair shop! The end of that work day for Hal concluded with “a cracked vertebra, six broken ribs, and a punctured lung,” …with the added bonus of missing teeth. Ouch!

Yeah, unfortunately this Phoenix auto repair shop can’t fix that either!

The Future of Car Technology

When you think about the future of cars, what comes to your mind? Is it high end luxury? Sleek designs? Or maybe incredible speed?

Every year, cars are becoming increasingly integrated with advanced technologies. You’ve probably already heard about cars with autonomous technology that can keep drivers from drifting into other lanes and even self-brake before colliding with other vehicles. These newer technological advancements are making every day feel more and more like a sci-fi movie! And it seems we have only begun to arrive in what will be a new era for vehicle transportation.

This article on Digitaltrends.com shows what just the next 10 years may have in store for us and it’s pretty exciting! Cars may be able to sense and communicate with each other over a network, more autonomous features will be added and improved upon, and we might even have the first self-driving vehicles for sale in around 5 years! Sounds like the only thing they won’t be able to do is their own automotive services! Har har! But really, the possibilities of what a vehicle is capable of are only increasing at this point.

So what do you think about the future of transportation? What features are you excited about?

Whatever the future brings, make sure to stop by your favorite automotive services shop, Carlife! Someone will have to make sure your future car stops parking itself in the neighbor’s lawn…

3 Steps to turn your Garage into an Awesome Hangout or Man Cave!

Do you only use half of your garage to park your car and let the rest of the space go to waste? Whether you need to clear out some clutter, or just finally finish unpacking from your move 3 years ago, chances are you might have some extra room in the garage to work with. There still plenty of ways to make the rest of your garage a nice homey, hangout or man cave without sacrificing a parking spot for your beloved vehicle. So here are some ideas to revamp your garage and add some extra space to your home that you can start on while you’re waiting on your Phoenix auto repair from Carlife!

Step 1: Plan it Out

Carefully consider your layout ahead of time, and make some preliminary sketches to plan the must haves like a couch, TV, bar, fridge, etc. Don’t forget about the essentials. For Phoenix that’s going to be air conditioning! At minimum consider getting a wall mounted unit for the garage. Don’t forget to plan a space for any tools, storage, yard work equipment and your car!

Step 2: From the Bottom

Don’t forget about what’s underneath you! Some garages have a nice finish and some are untreated concrete, either way you might want something to make the space a little more cozy and/or differentiate the hangout area from the rest of the garage. A large area rug is a simple, but nice touch. You can also consider carpet, floor boards, rubberized tile, or consider simply painting the floor.

Step 3: To the Top

Lastly, don’t forget about the ceiling! If it’s unfinished you may be able to utilize the extra space for storage, but a neat finished ceiling similar to the one inside the house provides a cleaner look. Consider some fun lighting like track lighting, or hanging lamps above your pool or poker table–steer clear of your typical fluorescent garage lighting!

Have you successfully transformed your garage into a man cave or hangout for the ages? Tell us about it and share some pictures during your next visit to Carlife for any of your Phoenix auto repair needs!
